[not] + [do] + [or] + [be] -- direction
What do we mean by directional terms like up, down, left, and right? If we slow down our thoughts, we see that these concepts can be decomposed into two simpler ideas —
(1) Order
(2) Rotation
Moving in a certain direction means first and foremost that we are proceeding in order. For example, to move right in the string A B C D E, we must follow the sequence A B C D E. Jumping around, like A C B E D or A E B D C, is not allowed. Another post shows how order, in turn, is derived from three more basic concepts.
Once order is established, the difference between left, right, up, and down is merely a matter of rotation. For example, movement to the right becomes movement up if we rotate 90 degrees counterclockwise. The idea of rotation, in turn, comes from the circle, one of the two rudimentary geometric shapes.
