Colds, chronic congestion, and sinus infections are common ailments that keep us from feeling and performing at our best. Congestion in particular can adversely affect sleep. If we cannot breathe, we will wake up frequently throughout the night and not recover completely. While some people find symptom relief using over the counter medications, it would obviously be preferable to employ a non pharmaceutical intervention.
A neti pot and some salt solve these problems in about 90 seconds. As with most things, the trainee should start slowly at first. He can try cleaning out his nose right before bed and see if it improves his sleep. If he is new to this practice, chances are that he will notice a significant difference. If he is still suffering after a week or so, he can experiment with more frequent washes. This method gives symptom relief and prophylactic protection against colds without the side effects inherent in all pharmaceuticals. It uses the simplest of ingredients (water and salt) and makes the trainee independent of a company’s or government’s decision to continue supplying a specific medication.
